Manifesto
I'm not standing for office. I'd be a shite politician, partly because I'm unpleasantly honest and partly because I hate wearing suits... If I wasn't, this is what I'd be campaigning on...

Cash For Honours & Funding Politics

16 Jan 2007

With all the ongoing furore over the fact that, as usual, political parties are selling honours for cash, I feel the need to bestow my own deep insights into the matters of political funding...

There's no doubt that both the Labour & Conservative parties need cash... Being in debt for £10s of millions from incompetent mis-management and profligate spending is difficult to recover from...

Political parties have always been funded by people seeking to buy influence. In some circumstances that can be a good thing. Not many though...

There are 3 reasons why anyone would give money to a political party:

  1. The donor is impressed by the party's policies, and wants to support them.
  2. The donor wants to influence legislation.
  3. The donor wants a title (eg. for trophy purposes).

The first two options probably go hand in hand a bit. I wouldn't give money unless I thought there was something in it for me - would you? The last one, to be fair, probably doesn't apply to many folk in the Lords.

Another irony about this affair is that the donors probably never expected honours, Blair probably wanted to exercise his god-like magnanimity to show off to them...

Funding Politics...

When people talk about 'funding politics' what they usually mean is 'funding for advertising'.

The first place to start when analysing any problem is to ask...

What problem are we trying to solve?

The question most people seem to be asking is: 'How do you fund political parties?'

Is this the right question to be asking? I think not... Perhaps these for a start:

  • What do political parties do for us?
  • What exactly do they need to spend money on?

Perhaps we need to review the whole system of politics in this country? After all, politics is not serving the sheeple. Even the dimmest, with the smallest imaginations of how much better things could be, seem pretty disappointed with them at the moment...

It has to be noted that possibly the biggest problem with government today is the utterly useless civil-service who do a terrible job, and are about as good with our money as a drunken sheikh in a casino...
