Make Drugs LegalUpd: 11 Mar 2007 The Telegraph ran an editorial on 9th March 2007 entitled 'Drugs are a menace and must be treated as such'. So I wrote to them: Alcohol and Tobacco are the gateway drugs - if there is such a thing... Upd: 25 Feb 2007 Drugs are not bad. Alcohol is a drug - and you drink alcohol - don't you. Anyway, without alcohol - most of us would never have even been born... 18 Dec 2006 People should be free to do what they want - as long as it doesn't harm anyone else. How can that not be a basic human right??? Why can't I choose for myself if I want to take drugs? I'm a grown man, I know what the risks are - and I know what the benefits are...
Before getting into a discussion about the rights & wrongs of individual drugs, you have to address this point: Prohibiting drugs doesn't usually stop them being available, and if a persons drug of choice is not available they will usually find a substitute. Making drugs illegal doesn't stop people from buying drugs.
If the drugs are not there - folk will just get whatever substitute they can find, and if that's alcohol - well, it's worse for you, and it can make you violent. If we had a culture of smoking weed instead of getting pissed, violent crime would drop dramatically.. Alcohol was prohibited in the USA in the 1920's. It was made legal again after the biggest crime wave the country had ever seen. Making alcohol illegal meant that the crime gangs were making a load of money. It's the same with drugs. Prohibition just means you have to get your drugs from criminals instead of the chemist.Guns, Drugs an' Ho's
The drug runners are the same people who are bringing guns into the country. They use the same routes to traffic people too. Making drugs legal would make their evil criminal empires unprofitable (or at least a lot less bountiful). They would go out of business. There would be less guns and people trafficking in the UK. Marvellous!
The only problem with drugs - is that some people can't handle them.Because a few people die or go crazy from some drugs - our overbearing nanny-state government say that 'to protect' us - you have to go to a criminal to buy 'em... How does that work then? Lots of people have problems with addiction to drugs, but people can get addicted to all sorts of things. Like food and gambling for example. Or cigarettes and alcohol... Those things are potentially much more harmful, but they're legal.
Illegal = Out Of Control. In 'protecting' us the government is:
What would happen if drugs were legalised.
This is an easy one! Look at Amsterdam... In Amsterdam - you can buy cannabis over the counter in licensed coffee-shops. They have one of the lowest rates of long-term cannabis usage in the world: Lifetime prevalence of marijuana use (ages 12+) in 2001 - USA: 36.9% :: Holland: 17.0% The conclusion has to be that some people take drugs *because* it's illegal!? It suggests that fewer people would use drugs if they were legal. The people who did take drugs would be taking less, of a higher quality. They wouldn't have to mix with criminals to get them. So they'd be happier and healthier. Potentially, more people who couldn't handle drugs would take them and get fucked-up. On the other hand - those people can already get drugs illegally - and they do. Maybe if they were getting uncut drugs, with decent support - they'd be ok... Seems like a no-brainer to me. For people to behave like adults - you have to treat them like adults...But what about heroin, crack, cocaine, crystal-meth - i.e. the really bad ones?
People, on a point of principle, must be allowed to make their own choices / mistakes. You can ensure they are fully informed. You can even ensure they're biologically compatible (i.e. not allergic etc.). You can check they're sane too. All these things should help reduce potential problems. It won't eliminate all risk, but risk is part of life. Why have steak every night?...
If you imagine that, at the chemist (for example), you could buy every single recreational drug you'd ever heard of... With all that choice, would you get hooked on a single drug like heroin - knowing it's reputation? I think most people wouldn't. They'd diversify. Same with the others listed above - they do have a fierce reputation of damage... Inevitably some people would become utterly useless junkie bastards. But I would strongly contend that the rate of new addictions would drop, and overall the number of addicts would also drop. Rehab clinics would be funded from taxes on drugs, and there would be plenty of help for people wanting to recover from an addiction. These are the drugs which promote the most crime...So, these are the drugs it's most important to get under control! CommentsThis is a sporadically moderated blog. I am not responsible for anything below! Here here!Damn straight dude. The facts are plain to all who want to see the truth. It\'s only since the 1920\'s that weed in particular began to be demonised and that\'s only because the big dollar men in the states had all their money in the wood pulping industry and hemp was proving to be a far more efficient (less waste, minimal pollution and no need for de-forestation) that they began a hate-filled campaign which has lasted to this day! Oh yeah, pointless fact of the day, The American Declaration of Independence was written on.......drum roll.......HEMP PAPER!! Mescaline on the NHS NOW!!! What business is it of yours what I do, read, buy, see, say, think, who I fuck, what I take into my body - as long as I do not harm another human being on this planet?” What a guy!
