Old People18 Feb 2007 We live in a deeply ageist time. It's crap the way old people are disrespected in our culture. A culture which disprespects it's old is a sick culture! In Native American culture, the highest term of respect for a man is 'Grandfather'. In our society 'Granddad' is used as an insult. The American 'Indians' respected the wisdom of age. Our culture worships the physical perfection of youth instead... Which is an ephemeral thing, of questionable virtue... A healthy culture loves it's old folk!
Old people are real human beings with plenty to offer. Our society should have a decent, secure place for it's old, and they should be able to contribute however they want to. Traditionally the old folks lived at home, took care of the children, and did the menial chores while the younger adults did the more physically strenuous work. Things The Old Are Good At:
Old folk make much better teachers & politicians than the young - and in this role they also ensure a more stable society from one generation to the next. Tony Blair - youngest PM ever - has fucked up more things, faster, than any PM before him. Besides. No one should be able to be a politician unless they've run their own sucessful business for 10+ years (IMNSHO)! Old People Used To Live With Their FamiliesIt's a tradgedy that so many old folk are left to die in characterless 'care' homes - where no one really gives a stuff about them. What's more - due to the government's penny-pinching and means-testing, many have to sell their homes to pay for this sub-standard 'service'. In the past in this country - and in the present day in most other's - the grandparents live with the family. Some behavioural biologists content that humans have evolved specifically to have a social structure based around three generations living together. It is the most natural thing in the world for families to live together.
Why is our society so dysfunctional? The failure of the relationship between the generations is part of the greater breakdown of what really is the 'fabric of society' - the family. There are a number of reasons why this most important relationship with our old has broken down - and they are all due to government interference... The government has taken on the role of the familyOur 'Nanny' state has put itself between us and our families - saying that it will provide for our old via the NHS and state-funded 'care' facilities. We don't have to - because 'the state is there for us'... To this end it taxes us all heavily. So heavily in fact, that it makes us too poor to afford a private alternative . (Those taxes push up the price of any service - in addition to taking cash from us). In return for taking half our money - the government provides a service which is shite. Just like a protection racket... I have heard 'care-home disgrace' stories for the last 20 years... Inheritance Tax Destroys Family UnityThe basis of a family's security is the family home. To take that away - every time the current owner dies - is an act of malicious sabotage against all the families in this country. With the current level of inheritance tax set at just £250k, most families have to sell the deceased's home to pay the tax. A tax that was intended for the rich now applies to the borderline poor. The cost of this tax to society in terms of a loss of financial and physical security - is enormous. Inheritance tax is taxing people twice. It's bloody wrong!
Big Family Homes - Passed on from Generation to Generation...Obviously we wouldn't want the situation to arise where a few landowners own most of the country, but that is not a problem we have to deal with today, or in this way. If families could pool their resources - i.e. live in big family homes - with no fear of a huge tax bill everytime someone dies - then there would be a strong basis for family unity and cooperation. It would be much easier for grandparents to be cared for at home...
