The DR Manifesto...

Manifesto
I'm not standing for office. I'd be a shite politician, partly because I'm unpleasantly honest and partly because I hate wearing suits... If I wasn't, this is what I'd be campaigning on...

Make Drugs Legal
Prohibition doesn't work, duh! It gives too much money to organised crime... Updated: Letter to the Telegraph 'Alcohol and Tobacco are the gateway drugs - if there is such a thing...'

Errant Fathers
How can fathers be expected to 'take responsibility' for their kids when the law always presumes in favour of the mother? I got a reply - and here's my reply to that Welfare and Compensation Culture = No Legal Responsibility

Prisons

You can`t touch me I`m somebody else`s bitch.

21 October 2006

(12 Dec 2006) Joe Arpaio - A man who has some ideas on how to run prisons...

There are about 80,000 people in british jails.

The average cost of a prison place in 2002 was £38,753 per year.
That's £3.1 Billion per year...

Am I missing something here? I thought these people were supposed to be paying us back?

Prisons shouldn't cost the taxpayer a penny.
Prisons should generate wealth for the community, not consume it.

A lot of people I speak to agree that prisoners should be put to work in the community. I agree, but only after they've paid for, grown or made their own food, clothes and energy.

Prisons should be self-sufficient and provide services to the community.

Most people I speak to agree that prisoners should do work in the community, but that idea enrages the council unions because if prisoners are doing community jobs, they fear their members will lose their jobs.

Well, that's not a good enough reason not to do it to my mind. Why should public sector jobs be guaranteed any more than any other job? No one has a 'right' to employment. They'll have to find another job, and with a healthy economy, that's easy...

Prison farms...

Prisons should be redesigned as working farms where the inmates produce all they need to live - on site.

Any surplus they produce could be sold and the money used to buy other essentials (ie clothes).

Any spare time could be spent doing work out in the community (where appropriate).

People who don't want to leave prisons should not be forced to.

Some people can't live in the outside world. Why force them? They would be a good influence and would still generate wealth for the prison by working.

People shouldn't be in prison for:

  • Drug possession.
  • Tax fraud
  • Driving offenses
