11 Mar 2007 This was prompted by the editorial comment in the Telegraph on 9th March 2007: I thought I'd picked up The Mirror by mistake... Gateway Drugs - Letter To The Daily TelegraphDear Sir, The two most dangerous drugs in existence are alcohol and tobacco. These are recorded as directly causing or contributing to the death of millions each year worldwide. The number of people dying from illicit drugs is miniscule in comparison. Your statement that 'a glass or two of Chilean red' is 'benign', whereas a joint will 'all to often' lead to 'harder drugs and addiction' is a facile misrepresentation of the truth. People die every day in the UK from alcohol overdose. No one has ever been recorded as having died from a cannabis overdose. It is demonstrably less harmful, by any measure of toxicity, than red wine. The claim that cannabis is a 'gateway drug' is now virtually the sole reason used to justify it's criminalisation, but these claims are not borne out by research: "For the overwhelming majority of marijuana smokers, pot is clearly a 'terminus' rather than a gateway.". Indeed, whether any drug acts as 'gateway' to others is debatable. References: While it may be a fact that 70% of crime is fuelled by drugs, this is not because drugs cause crime by their very nature. On the contrary, drugs are just a commodity. People commit crimes for cars, clothes and cash but we don't blame those commodities for the crime itself. The crimewave of 1920's America is widely accepted to have been caused by the prohibition laws. People didn't stop drinking, they just had to buy their booze from criminals instead, making the criminals rich. We have exactly the same situation now with drugs. Drugs don't cause crime - prohibition does. On visiting the editorial on their website (link at top), I found plenty of comments more or less agreeing with my stance...
