The DR Manifesto...

Manifesto
I'm not standing for office. I'd be a shite politician, partly because I'm unpleasantly honest and partly because I hate wearing suits... If I wasn't, this is what I'd be campaigning on...

Make Drugs Legal
Prohibition doesn't work, duh! It gives too much money to organised crime... Updated: Letter to the Telegraph 'Alcohol and Tobacco are the gateway drugs - if there is such a thing...'

Errant Fathers
How can fathers be expected to 'take responsibility' for their kids when the law always presumes in favour of the mother? I got a reply - and here's my reply to that Welfare and Compensation Culture = No Legal Responsibility

Tourism and Holidays in the UK

10 October 2006

The UK is not tourist friendly

Compared with some other countries the UK is woefully lacking in facilities...

Just think how much nicer it'd be for everyone if we had:

  • More service stations on roads.
  • Free campsites & overnight parking by service-stations.
  • Compulsory foreign language lessons in schools.
  • Top-of-the-range leisure-centers with multiple pools, water-chutes, saunas, steam rooms, gyms etc. - in every major town.

We could have had those leisure-centers but the wise Tony Blair and his wise government decided that the Millenium Dome was a better investment of our cash... Muppets!

What the UK needs is more cash coming into it's own holiday resorts, and I mean from proper business, not bloody government grants... That could happen if air-travel became expensive.

Cheap air-travel has not helped our tourism industry

If air travel was taxed to reflect the damage it causes, it would become much more expensive.

This would result in a lot more people from the UK, holidaying in the UK.

The amount of money which would stay in the country (instead of going abroad) would quickly and naturally regenerate all our seaside towns and other tourist areas. It would make our country a lot richer.

I think we should bring back sailing ships. They don't use any nasty fuels. There used to be some magnificently engineered, large sailing ships back in the past. They're beautiful. It'd be a good thing if they came back - and if fossil fuels weren't so cheap, they might!

Eventually, given the taxes on fossil fuels, biofuels would be developed which could power aircraft. There's no reason why the industry couldn't have a renaissance, although it's hard to imagine how it could be as cheap as it is now without some technological breakthrough...
