  12. The EU's 15% Target For Renewables

22nd January 2008

Guys, It'd be easy to surpass these targets anyway - all the government would have to do is do what the German & Dutch governments have done - and drop taxes on renewables, set buy-back tariffs and allow selling back to the grid.

You guys have got to stop thinking of large-scale renewables as being the bread-and-butter of renewable energy. The opposite is the case...

Most renewable energy would NOT come from huge installations, but from small ones.

For Example:

  • If every building had evacuated tubes & a big storage tank - that would heat every building in the country.
  • It would cost less than £60Bn to do *today*.
  • It would take maybe 2 years to retrofit every building.
  • These systems would have a working life of 20-50 years.

This *alone* would surpass the 15% target. Plus it is FAR more cost-effective than nuclear and far, far safer.

Yesterday I went for a walk to a local river. Swollen by the rains, the water is pounding over the locks & wiers.

If those locks and wiers had hydro-electyric turbines - it would *easily* provide enough electricity for the entire village. Even in summer - there's enough flow to provide a decent output. The *only* reason we don't have those turbines is because of wrong-headed priorities & bad legislation.

If the country was full of small-scale renewables - the output from the large ones would be able to be used exclusivley for industry and transport.

Until you understand that renewables is mostly about small-scale - then your objections to it will be flawed.

Received this rather late in the day. In view of the crucial importance of this, would it not be better for you & Nigel to formulate a considered UKIP Policy Statement based on the E&E report to which we might add our names if so needed?

Best wishes, Derek
