Hi Derek,
thanks for your reply.

I think it is irrelevant whether GW is anthropogenic or not. We should be using non-polluting technologies anyway - because we can - and it simply makes good housekeeping sense. This approach cuts to the heart of the problem and obviates the need for so much pointless discussion and hand wringing...

It seems that you have consistently missed the point about the huge range of renewable technologies which are available - and like most people who seem to oppose renewables in favour of nuclear - you always pick one and say that it couldn't supply our energy needs. You did this previously with wind-power, and now with solar...

It is clearly true that no single renewable technology is likely to be adequate to meet all our demands, but to use this as an argument against the whole field of technology is disingenuous.

If we were to use *the full range* of renewable technologies that were available to us - we would easily be able to meet our energy demands. The only problem at the moment with this is the cost & profitablility of such ventures. Setting enforced buy-back tariffs, and reducing tax and regulation on the sector would solve that problem overnight.

This overbearingly statist government is too arrogant and inept to realise that real-world probelms are best solved by private business, not themselves. Grandiose government-backed wind-power schemes are a mirror-image of the government itself - a vastly ugly and inefficient method of solving a problem which would be best solved at the grass roots...

I originally joined UKIP because I thought it stood for the individual, not the state. By rejecting the european state, and promoting independence - I felt sure that was what UKIP's principles surely were...

After being party to the discussions over energy policy - it seems that I was wrong... As long as UKIP favours state-funded action over state-encouraged individual action it will not be able to represent me or my views...

Reply From Derek

Believe me, I wish you were right that all renewables taken together would do the job but the figures I have seen, both for the UK and Europe, suggest a huge energy shortfall even if all the new technologies were to get off the ground (which I wouldn't stake my life on). Most of the rest of what you say makes immediate sense to me but I would be in favour of giving the government ... and indeed the misled Tories ... space to U-turn without loss of face. After all we were all confused to different extents by the fraudulent UN-IPCC "consensus", including the President of the Royal Society, which is only slowly being corrected by the media!

One problem with solar technology, particularly in overcrowded U.K., is the ground space needed but this does seem to be a good solution for African countries with extensive desert regions which could give them a real commercial advantage. Export by them is another matter because of "transmission losses" but power-intensive industries could thrive. What do you think?

I don't know UKIP's view on state-funded vs individual action, or indeed that of any other political parties other than New Labour, but still repeat that we shall not get anywhere by promulgating scientific inexactitudes. That is the sole point of my draft letter. Perhaps I am a little sceptical about "individual" action; most of us would rather watch football on TV until the lights suddenly go out.

Keep writing ... 2008 should see intense debate followed hopefully by an optimum "New Year Resolution".

Best Wishes

Derek

Reply From Phil

Hi Folks,
As some of you will no doubt recall, I have been a sceptic about global warming for some time, mainly because the increase of CO2 simply does not look big enough to upset this planets mechanism in a significant way.

If you are interested, you can go to the link immediately below, and read the Senate report and the views of the scientists who have taken the view that the IPCC is not representative of the full scientific community.

http://epw.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=Minority.SenateReport

It will take me some time to read this report fully, but I believe it is very significant.

Have a happy new year, and may your aspirations come to fruition.

Regards,
Phil.
